Do you know the feeling of spinning your wheels but going nowhere?

Usually it’s a “season of waiting” to get from one life stage to the next, to progress into a dream and a future you are called to. But have you ever considered that where you are right now is exactly what you are called to?

It’s easy to have a mindset of forward. It’s something that’s conditioned into us with those questions of “where are you going? What do you want to do? What is your dream?” It’s great to have a dream, and it’s important to have direction, but not when you lose sight of the path that you take to get from here to there. Because “here” is more important than “there”. “Here” is the foundation for every future you can dream up, and it is the framework for tomorrow. It’s your “Point A” to your “Point B”, and you can’t have one without the other.

Think of traveling to some scenic location, such as the top of a mountain. Your goal is to reach the top, but you don’t put on horse blinders until you get there. There isn’t only one thing to see—there are many. There is the base of the path, the trees, and then half way up you begin to see the neighboring valleys and mountains. It seems that you have to stop often as the breathtaking beauty shifts, and you must pause to take in this new view. The sun might catch the trees in a new way, or you might round a bend to see a whole new group of mountains that you’d only seen from the bottom before, but can now look down on from your vantage point. There’s so much to see and take in that getting to the top of the mountain becomes only a part of what the journey is about.

It’s the same way with life. God gives us each a calling, but the most important calling is today. Your family, your job, your friends—whatever today holds is what you are called to. It’s this moment, and what has been asked of you now.

If you walk through life focusing only on what you’re called to in the long run, you’ll miss your calling. You will reach the top of the mountain, look down, and wonder how you missed so much on your journey. Each day and each moment is a unique breath of opportunity. It’s hardest to realize when you’re in a season of waiting, or when you feel like you’ve got no path. Even those times when you feel stagnant or not meeting your potential, know that you have been called to that moment. You are exactly on track. You might not be able to see the view, but sometimes our walk requires that. Just because you can’t see where you’re walking at one moment doesn’t mean you’re not still on the right path.

Proverbs 16:9 says, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps” (NIV). Embrace what God brings you each day, because it is a step in the direction he is taking you. It is a journey, but one that you are called to a little at a time. That way when you look back, you will see that God was faithful, and that you truly lived your life to the fullest.
